The Laguna Phuket resort complex has opened its newly revamped golf course, following a major upgrade to all 18 holes.

Canadian designer Paul Jansen, who previously worked with Sir Nick Faldo’s design company, undertook the project, reversing the front and back nine holes and creating new contours and “accentuated” water features.

“In making changes to the original course, I wanted to create a story full of adventure,” Jansen explained. “I want golfers to explore the property and discover the many outstanding features, as I did through the design and build stages. This has been achieved and the course is now more strategic and memorable.”

He added that particular attention was paid to the first holes on each nine, describing the opening par 4 hole as a “wonderful introduction” that features a large banyan tree and a water hazard. The back nine starts with a shorter par 4 that features a large body of water at the back of the green.

“This hole is visually impressive, but is more difficult than the length suggests,” Jansen said of the 10th hole. “The green is best attacked from the left side of the fairway, but beware the large fairway bunker and water behind the green, so be sure to choose the right club.”

Laguna Phuket Golf Club has also introduced a new range of golf carts.

The course forms part of the Laguna Phuket resort complex, which includes Banyan Tree, Angsana, Dusit and Outrigger hotels, plus the Laguna Holiday Club. It is also expanding, with the development of a new hotel, luxury condominiums, a waterpark, and space for up to 1,000 shops and restaurants.
