LAN Airlines has taken delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The Chilean airline, which recently joined forces with Brazil’s TAM Airlines, becomes the airline in the Americas to operate Boeing’s new fuel-efficient twin-aisle aircraft. In total it has plans to operate a fleet of 32 B787s, either purchased directly or leased.

“We are delighted to receive this airplane. This is a landmark moment not just for LAN, but for all our passengers in Latin America and other countries the 787 will operate to,” said Ignacio Cueto, CEO of LAN Airlines.

“Thanks to this aircraft, we will be able to operate longer routes using a plane that is more environmentally-friendly and is highly efficient, which will ensure that LAN will be able to move forward through sustainable growth. Above all, the special features of the 787 will allow us to further improve the travel experience for our passengers,” he added.

The airline will operate its B787s from its Santiago home base to key international hubs such as Santiago, Buenos Aires, Lima, Los Angeles, Madrid and Frankfurt.

LAN becomes only the fourth airline in the world to operate the Dreamliner, following Japan Airlines, ANA and Ethiopian Airlines.
