Mount Rinjani National Park in Lombok has reopened to tourists, following the volcanic eruption that led to the closure of not only the park, but also Lombok and Bali airports.
The Jakarta Post reported the park’s manager, Agus Boediono, as saying that the main hiking path to Mount Rinjani is now open to tourists following a decline in volcanic activity. He added however, that visitors are still barred from trekking all the way to the peak of Rinjani.
“We only allow hikers to climb until Pelawangan (a rest point and camping area on the trekking path). They are not allowed to climb further up to Lake Segara Anak, much less to the peak of Rinjani,” Agus was quoted saying.
The 3,726-metre-high Mount Rinjani is one of the island’s most popular tourist destinations, handling 60,000 visitors in the first nine months of 2015.
The eruption of a sub-volcano, Mount Baujari, in late October, caused widespread disruption to tourism and air traffic in the region.
