London Southend Airport carried more than 700,000 passengers in its first year since its redevelopment.
The Essex airport saw 721, 661 passengers come through in the year up to the end of February 2013, beating a previous record set in 1967 of 692,000.
More than GBP100 million has been spent on the airport since 2008, with easyJet launching its first major passenger services on 2 April 2012.
The airport is now aiming to further boost numbers in 2013 with the opening of a new arrivals area in June and a total of GBP10 million worth of development underway to extend the terminal. easyJet will base a fourth aircraft at the airport for 2013 with more tour operators signing services.
“We designed our new facilities to be ‘simply easier’ and the whole team continues to work hard to ensure we deliver on our very special commitments to passengers – that they should wait no more than 4 minutes to go through security and that, on arrival with hand baggage, they are on the rail station platform within 15 minutes of leaving the aircraft,” said Alastair Welch, managing director at the airport.
“It is clearly this unique service that means more and more passengers are choosing London’s newest airport – as was reflected when we recently rated highest in easyJet’s Customer Satisfaction Survey across all its European airports,” he added.
