Lufthansa will cancel almost half of its long-haul flights tomorrow, due to a pilot strike.
The Vereinigung Cockpit union said pilots flying long-haul Airbus A330, A340, A380 and Boeing 747 aircraft would strike from 8am to midnight on Tuesday 8 September, marking the latest in a series of walk-outs.
Lufthansa has made provisions however, with volunteer and non-striking pilots being enrolled to keep more than half of the airline’s 174 long-haul services in the air.
Lufthansa said that “a relatively large number” of pilots and co-pilots had said they are willing to continue working, allowing it to operate 90 long-haul services to from Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf. The remaining 84 flights will be cancelled.
“Any customers whose flight is cancelled as a result of the strike will be able to rebook or to cancel their booking free of charge or penalty,” Lufthansa said in a statement.
“Lufthansa is doing its utmost to minimise the impact of this strike action on its customers. All Lufthansa customers holding tickets for long-haul travel from or to Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf are urged to check the latest status of their flight on LH.com well in advance of their scheduled departure,” it added.
Tuesday’s industrial action is a repeat of the strike undertaken by pilots on 21 March this year, which caused about 74 long-haul flights to be cancelled. The dispute is due to the airline’s plans to cut payments for pilots wanting to retire early.
