Lufthansa’s first new Airbus A350 aircraft landed at Munich Airport on Wednesday, ahead of its entry into service on the Munich-Delhi route.
The airline has ordered a total of 25 A350s, and at least the first 10 of these twin-aisle jets will be based in the Bavarian city. Its first commercial long-haul flight will depart on 10 February 2017, bound for the Indian capital. Boston has also been earmarked as one of the aircraft’s early destinations.
The A350 will offer 293 seats in three cabin classes, including 48 in business class, 21 in premium economy and 224 in economy.
The first aircraft was flown from the Airbus factory in Toulouse to Munich by Lufthansa pilot Captain Martin Hoell. “The A350-900 is the most modern plane with the most up-to-date technical features a commercial pilot can fly,” Captain Hoell said.
Onboard the delivery flight was Lufthansa employee Anja Oskoui, dressed as a Christmas angel, who was carrying a EUR10,000 (US$10,400) cheque to a Munich orphanage.
Lufthansa is in the process of developing one of the most modern long-haul fleets of any airline. As well as the 24 A350s, the airline has 14 A380s and 19 Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals, and it has also ordered 34 brand new B777-9s. These new long-haul aircraft are expected to replace Lufthansa’s older jets such as the A340 and B747-400.
