London Luton Airport has secured a GBP100 million revamp to increase its capacity to 18 million passengers a year.
Theinvestment will be put into a larger and more modern terminal that will add 15 immigration lanes, nine luggage belts, more shops and airport lounges.
A new taxiway for aircraft has also been granted, which means it will be able to handle more flights.
Currently around 9.7 million people use Luton a year with easyJet based at the airport. Monarch, Thomson and Ryanair are also the main operators, but the airport, which was bought by Aena last year, will be looking for more routes with the expansion plan.
The changes are set to take place over the next 12 years in three phases.
“Our vision is for a vastly improved airport which plays a major role in providing more capacity in the London system,” said London Luton chairman Clive Condie. Sophie Dekkers, commercial director at easyJet added: “As London Luton’s largest airline, flying just under 5m passengers in and out of the airport each year, we welcome this final planning consent which will enable London Luton to meet its full potential and drive economic growth in the region.”
