Malaysia Airlines has offered the families affected by the MH17 US$5,000 to ease their finances during the crisis.
The carrier will offer the money to the families of each passenger with Citibank which will not be offset against financial compensation or rights to claim.
The airline said it will also provide hotel accommodation, meals and transport assistance and has assigned trained ‘caregivers’ to each family to provide ‘emotional support and basic needs’.
Seventy-nine of these are based in Amsterdam, where KLM has also been helping, while 43 are in Kuala Lumpur.
A statement from the airline read: “Malaysia Airlines’ primary focus is to care for the family members affected by MH17. The airline will be supporting the families during these trying times. Malaysia Airlines’ top priority remains to provide care and assistance to the families of the passengers and crew and any information with regard to their personal circumstances will not be made public.”
Dutch investigators are said to have been allowed to examine bodies from the crash site, 196 of which are currently on a refrigerated train in the town of Torez, Ukraine. Ukrainian officials say 272 bodies have been found so far of the 298 that were on the aircraft.
