Malaysia to hold day of mourning for MH17 victims

Malaysia has announced plans to hold a “national day of mourning” for the victims of flight MH17, once all the bodies have been repatriated.
In a statement this week, Liow Tiong Lai, Malaysia’s minister of transport, said that “efforts to locate and identify victims of the MH17 tragedy continue” and that arrangement are being made to fly the bodies back to Malaysia.
“Once bodies have been identified and the necessary forensic work completed, the next-of-kin will be informed. Arrangements for repatriating the bodies will then be discussed with the next-of-kin,” the minister said.
“Arrangements are being made for a national day of mourning once all remains have returned to Malaysia,” he added.
While a team of investigators has now been able to access the crash site, the area remains subject to fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian rebels. Up to 80 bodies are believed remain at the crash site.
Forty-three Malaysian citizens died when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down on 18 July 2014.
