Malindo Air has expanded its fleet, following the delivery of its fifth and sixth Boeing 737-900ER aircraft.
The new Kuala Lumpur-based airline, which is a subsidiary of Indonesia’s Lion Air, welcomed the new aircraft to its base at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Monday 23 September 2013, following a delivery flight from the Boeing factory in Seattle. Following the delivery, Malindo’s fleet will expand to nine aircraft – six 180-seat B737-900ERs and three 720-seat ATR72-600 turboprops.
“This is an important milestone for Malindo Air. We have been witnessing gradual growth in the aviation industry over the last few years driven by a continued increase in consumer confidence and spending. In 2012, passenger traffic growth in Malaysia was 5%. The traffic growth of 2013 is expected to be 10%,” said Malindo’s CEO, Chandran Rama Muthy.
“Every aircraft we inaugurate passes through a diligent review process by our team and the manufacturers… [and the] newly delivered aircraft is ready to be placed in operation,” he added.
The B737-900ER is the largest version of the single-aisle B737 series, and Malindo operates the aircraft in a two-class configuration with 180 seats – 12 in business class and 168 in economy.
The new aircraft are expected to be deployed on flights from KLIA to Jakarta and Bali, marking Malindo’s entry into Indonesia.
