At least 20 people are missing after a bridge collapsed on the main Mumbai-Goa highway last night, sending two buses plunging into the Savitri River.
The Times of India reports that the two Mumbai-bound buses were among the “dozen or so” vehicles that are believed to have fallen into the river, which was swollen by floodwaters.
Rescue workers, including approximately 80 divers, have been brought in to search for the victims, but no survivors – or indeed any of the missing vehicles – have so far been found.
The incident occurred late last night in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, about 170km south of Mumbai. The bridge that collapsed is reported to date back to the British colonial era.
