Marriott International is on track for a strong year in Asia Pacific, with nearly 80 hotels targeted to open, adding 19,000 new rooms to the region.

In addition, the hotel group will debut two brands in Asia Pacific in 2017 – Moxy and Delta – taking its total collection in the region to 23 brands across a range of market segments.

“2017 is already shaping up to be a great year for Marriott across Asia Pacific. We are looking at nearly 80 new properties slated to open their doors this year, which means an average of two hotels a week from now till the end of the year,” said Craig S. “With our larger portfolio of individually distinctive brands… we now provide guests greater access unprecedented choices and unparalleled benefits on their travels whether for business or leisure.”

Making their debuts in the region this year will be Moxy Hotels, the modern boutique hotel brand that will launch in Tokyo, and Delta Hotels, the premium Canadian hotel concept that will make its regional debut in suburban Shanghai this summer.

Elsewhere in Asia Pacific, Marriott is planning to bolster its resort portfolio with 16 new properties including the Ritz-Carlton Langkawi in Malaysia, Courtyard by Marriott Siem Reap in Cambodia and the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.

To staff this expanding portfolio of hotels, the company is creating partnerships with multiple hotel schools and colleges across the region, including 150 in China alone. By the end of 2017, Marriott expects to employ more than 140,000 staff at its Asia Pacific hotels.

“As a company that puts people first, our growth is really a reflection of our talented associates. By the end of 2017 we will have created over 20,000 jobs across Asia Pacific, offering our talented people the chance to grow and achieve their career goals with us,” Smith added.

Marriott currently operates 550 hotels comprising more than 170,000 rooms in Asia Pacific. But this portfolio is expected to almost double, with 500 properties in the pipeline and scheduled to open by 2021.
