Marriott promotes women’s leadership in Asia

Marriott International has hosted its first ‘Women in Leadership’ Conference in Asia Pacific.
Held at the Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel from 7-8 October, the three-day conference brought together more than 75 of Marriott’s female executives from across Asia Pacific.
Focusing on such topics as diversity, owner relations and coping with coping with business pressures, the aim of the event was to allow the attendees to share their career insights and learn about new development opportunities.
“Across Asia Pacific, we are seeing the business community recognising and rewarding the talent and expertise women bring to the workplace. There is still progress to be made and our goal is to increase our ranks of female executives by 15% over the next two years,” said Simon Cooper, Marriott’s president & managing director for Asia Pacific.
Addressing the event, Marriott’s chief sales & marketing officer for Asia Pacific, Peggy Fang Roe, hosted a presentation entitled ‘Defining the Role of Women in Organisations’, while Yibing Mao, general counsel & senior vice president of asset management for Asia Pacific, discussed the issue of ‘Developing & Inspiring Our Young Women’.
Globally, women now represent 52% of Marriott’s total workforce of approximately 200,000 people. And the percentage of women taking up senior positions is gradually increasing in Asia, where 13% of Marriott’s hotel general managers are female. The growing influence of female executives is even more prominent in Greater China, where 16% of GMs are female.
In terms of Marriott’s executive training programmes, women represent 23% of people of the Asia General Manager Elevate programme, 28% of the Asia Executive Development programme, 24% of the Global Executive Development programme, and 41% of the newly launched Global Professional Leadership programme.
“Embracing diversity and creating opportunities is how we do business around the world and is essential to our success,” added Cooper. “Marriott international prides itself on being among the most welcoming and inclusive companies to work for, regardless of cultural background, gender or race,” Cooper said.
