Melia Hotels International has continued its expansion in Indonesia with the signing of its first hotel on the island of Sumatra.
Scheduled to open in 2017, the Melia Pekanbaru will be located in the capital of Riau province.
It will bring another 160 upscale rooms to Pekabaru’s inventory, along with a range of facilities including restaurants and bars, a sky garden, swimming pool, fitness centre, spa and even a rooftop wedding chapel. The property will also house extensive conference and banqueting space, including a 700m² ballroom.
At 29 storeys, Melia Pekanbaru will be housed in Sumatra’s tallest building, overlooking the Siak River.
“The opening of Melia Pekanbaru adds vibrant appeal to the Riau capital with the familiar Melia warmth of world-class hospitality,” said Bernardo Cabot, Melia’s regional vice president for Asia Pacific. “This newest partnership is further testament to our commitment to Indonesia, where, together with our hotel owners, we will ensure sustained growth and long-term profitability.”
Indonesia is a key market for Melia; the company has 16 hotels in the country, both operating and in the pipeline. The Spanish hotel group is planning to double its Asian portfolio in the next three years with the addition of 30 more hotels.
