Spain’s Meliá Hotels International has moved into Bangkok for the first time with the signing of a new upscale hotel.
The company has penned a management agreement with Thailand’s TCC Asset World for the new-build Meliá Bangkok, which will rise in the city’s Sukhumvit district. The hotel is due to open in 2022.
“It gives us great confidence to… launch the Meliá brand in a thriving destination such as Bangkok,” said Bernardo Cabot Estarellas, Melia’s senior vice president for Asia Pacific.
“Our growth strategy must be accompanied with major local partners who share our vision, philosophy and culture – even more so when we’re entering the second most visited country in Southeast Asia. I believe Meliá’s impeccable track record of 60 years in hotel management and Spanish service culture will stand us in good stead.”
Managed under the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand, the new upscale hotel will feature 315 rooms and suites, plus several F&B outlets, a spa, fitness centre and meeting space. It will form part of a mixed-use development also featuring retail and office space.
Meliá Bangkok marks the latest step in the company’s Asian expansion strategy, through which it is planning to double its portfolio of hotels in region by 2020. At present there are 13 Melia hotels open in Asia with another 21 in the pipeline.
