Spain’s flagship hospitality brand Meliá Hotels International is one of the largest hotel companies in the world. And, with a focus on international growth, expanding its presence in more than 40 countries across four continents, the Iberian brand is only aiming to get bigger!
In this exclusive TD interview, we caught up with Pablo Aloy Gomez, general manager of Meliá Yangón, to find out more about Yangon as a destination, the hotel’s overarching strategy, and what’s next for Meliá Hotels International.
TD: Could you tell us a bit about your background before you came to Meliá Yangón?
PG: Prior to boarding with Meliá, I have more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, working with international hotel brands in five countries and four continents (Europe, America, Africa and Asia). I now have over eight years of experience with the company, two of them being in Melia Danang, Vietnam.
TD: What is Yangon like as a holiday destination?
PG: Yangon in Myanmar is considered one of the safest destinations in the world today. It has many different attractions that make it a unique city to visit in Asia — architectural marvels, local markets, local food, and of course all the amazing Pagodas – we have one of the biggest lying Budas (Chaukhtatgyi Paya), Inya lake, exciting festivals, Chinatown and a vibrant nightlife.
TD: How do you plan on pushing the development of the hotel? What’s your strategy?
PG: Our strategy, most important of all, is based on our amazing team and reputation on F&B quality, installations, services, MICE, leisure and groups events organisation.
TD: What is your personal goal for the hotel?
PG: I’m very glad to be here in Yangon and I’ve been working with Meliá brand for eight years thus I would like to continue bringing warm Spanish hospitality — balanced, thoughtful and with agile service — to the amazing city of Yangon.

TD: What can we expect from Meliá Hotels International?
PG: Meliá Hotels International, after more than 60 years, manages more than 390 hotels in forty countries and four continents, with seven different brands strategically positioned to address different customer typologies.
