Spanish hotelier Meliá has signed its first two hotels in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou.

The company has been without a presence in China since the former Gran Melia Shanghai was rebranded as a Kempinski last year. But it retains a strong pipeline in the country, and has now unveiled plans for two new properties in the capital of Henan province: the Meliá Zhengzhou and Innside by Meliá Zhengzhou.

The two properties will both be located in the same three-building complex in Zhengzhou’s main business district. First to open in June 2015 will be the Innside by Meliá Zhengzhou, marking the debut of the modern city hotel brand in Asia. The Meliá Zhengzhou will then follow in January 2016.

Together, the two hotels will offer 933 rooms and significant MICE facilities, including a 900-pax capacity ballroom.

The two Zhengzhou properties form part of a major Chinese expansion plan for Meliá. Later this year the company will open its hotels in the cities of Xi’an and Jinan, with new openings in Tianjin and Chongqing following in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
