Merlin Entertainments, the global theme park operator, has confirmed plans to bring its Legoland brand to China.
The Shanghai Daily reported one of Merlin’s Chinese executives as saying this week that the park will be developed near Dianshan Lake, in the Qingpu district of Shanghai. It is expected to open within five years.
“The outdoor amusement theme park covering several hectares will promise a very fun experience,” said Yang Shengjun, channel marketing director of Merlin Entertainments China.
At present, there is only one Legoland in the Far East, located in Malaysia. But the concept is also expected to debut in Japan and South Korea in the near future. The Shanghai park will be the first in China.
Plans for the Shanghai park were first announced in 2015 during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK, where Merlin is based.
