The team investigating the disappearance of flight MH370 has said the underwater search is expected to commence in September.

In its first update for almost a month, the Australia-based Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said that the survey of a 60,000km² search area in the Indian Ocean is “well underway”. This will provide the basis of the underwater search, which the JACC said is “likely to commence in early September and take up to 12 months to complete”.

Angus Houston, who is heading up the MH370 investigation, was recently appointed as Australia’s Special Envoy for the MH17 disaster. But despite this, the JACC confirmed that the search for flight MH370 “continues uninterrupted”.

“We remain fully committed to conducting a thorough undersea search of the likely impact zone in the Indian Ocean,” the JACC said in a statement. “Australia owes it to the families of all of those on board MH370, the travelling public and indeed the wider world to solve this mystery.”

Deputy coordinator Judith Zielke will oversee the operations of the JACC while Angus Houston is in Ukraine.
