Innovation is the way for the future. New media and mobility are driving change in practically every industry and airports are no strangers. These facts were highlighted in the SITA Airports IT trends survey which revealed that today airports are turning to innovative IT technologies. Budgets are being allocated to improve existing technologies thereby getting on to savvy mobile apps, social media and intelligent technologies including geolocation services to improve passenger experiences.
Increased capacity means enhanced technologies to result in a profitable business. The survey further emphasised on the fact that optimizing the use of available real estate is a priority and passenger flow management will become more important.
The next three years will see geolocation services gain momentum thereby enhance passenger experiences and reduce congestion. It is surprising to know that just 10% of airports today offer new way-finding services. This number however has been forecasted to touch to 70% by 2015. Further, 88% of airports are planning to invest in mobile applications by the end of 2015; 78% of airports also plan to invest in social media.
