The Monarch Group has announced a new managing director and the intention to buy new aircraft for its airline.
Airbus, Bombardier and Boeing have all pitched for the new 60 aircraft order Monarch will place this quarter, with a list price value of US$6 billion.
It comes as the group announced Andrew Swaffield as the new managing director of Monarch Airlines.
Swaffield joins the group from Avios Group where he was managing director for seven years, with previous roles including management titles at Thomas Cook and British Airways.
Swaffield has now taken on responsibility of the airline from Monarch Group’s executive chairman Iain Rawlinson, who had stepped in for an interim period when Kevin George stepped down.
“I am delighted to welcome Andrew to Monarch Airlines, at an exciting time both for the Airline and for the Group. His deep understanding of the travel industry, where he is a recognised authority on customer loyalty and where he has a proven track record in leadership and the creation of stakeholder value, will help us build on the foundations laid by the successful turnaround of the group’s performance over the last two years,” said Rawlinson.
The group’s good news continued during the festive period with its overall bookings up 37%.
Mobile bookings in the Christmas and New Year period quadrupled for the group compared to last year, with new destinations to France, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Italy proving to be popular with customers.
“2014 has taken off well for Monarch Airlines, with demand for our flights over the holiday period both well ahead of the marketplace and ahead of last year,” said Rawlinson.
Last October Monarch Group announced an 11.7% increase in turnover in its full-year results to GBP763.2 million.
