MoT to invest in QR codes at tourist destinations

The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) will invest in Quick Response (QR) codes to aid tourists at various tourist destinations.

Last month, the Ministry signed an agreement with Audio Compass (India) Pvt Ltd and technology company, Genesys International Corp Ltd to launch a QR project that was scheduled to start in September end. The project is now expected to launch before the end of this year.

QR codes are two-dimensional bar-codes that can store large amounts of information. These codes, which can be read using apps on smartphones and dedicated QR reading devices, can link directly to text, websites, emails and phone numbers.

“One of the biggest challenges for travellers is the last mile of travel, that is, when they are past planning and booking stage and are actually on ground travelling,” Gautam Shewakramani, founder and chief executive of Audio Compass was quoted by The Mint.

Audio Compass already provides audio guides at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Khajuraho and Salar Jung Museum and plans to start offering QR codes at these places initially. Plans are also afoot to start QR codes with monuments that come under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
