The days of cruise ship exercise being limited to a morning jog around the deck could be a thing of the past, following a new partnership between MSC Cruises and Technogym which looks set to revolutionise passengers’ fitness regimes.

In an industry-first, MSC Cruises will utilise Technogym’s “end-to-end wellness expertise” to provide passengers with a wealth of fitness options, including personal training, health food and even fitness-based shore excursions.

“The global wellness travel segment is projected to grow by nearly 10% annually over the next five years, as consumers are increasingly seeking out ways to combine being active and healthy with their vacation,” said Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises. “Through the launch of the MSC Cruises’ Wellness Experience powered by Technogym… we are further expanding our offering and making available to our guests the first completely personalised, 360° wellness experience at sea.”

The Wellness Experience will be one of five experience categories that MSC passengers can choose when booking their cruise.

Having completed a pre-cruise fitness questionnaire, guests will have a personalised “Aspiration Map” developed for them. Once onboard, they will receive a one-on-one consultation with a Master Trainer and a medical check-up with the onboard doctor. Passengers will then have access to the “mywellness” app, which tracks their movement of the users and assigns daily targets, and will be offered a range of fitness classes, including tai chi, pilates and yoga.

Shore excursions will be designed to complement the onboard fitness programmes, including activities such as jogging, hiking, bicycle tours, kayaking and snorkelling. And back onboard, special “wellness menus” will be offered according to the guest’s fitness regime.

Guests choosing the Wellness Experience will also be offered in-room fitness amenities, a healthy minibar and fitness TV channels.

“For more than 20 years we have been promoting the concept of wellness as a lifestyle made of regular physical exercise, a healthy diet and a positive mental attitude,” said Nerio Alessandri, president & founder of Technogym. “Today, wellness represents a global consumer trend that can impact on people’s life and health. This is why we are proud to partner with MSC Cruises to develop and deliver a unique and completely new wellness experience.”
