Work has started on lengthening the MSC Sinfonia in Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard.

The ship is the second in the Lirica-class that will be extended following MSC Armonia last year.

Similarly to Armonia, Sinfonia’s hull will be split in two and next week will have a 24-metre section added in between.

This will provide an additional 193 cabins to the ship, with kids’ club areas featuring LEGO and Chicco to also be fitted during the 10-week drydock period.

“Everyone at MSC Cruises loves our partnerships with LEGO and Chicco – they are two fantastic internationally-renowned brands. It is great news that we are giving families even more opportunity to enjoy these facilities by adding them to MSC Sinfonia,” said Giles Hawke, executive director UK & Ireland at MSC Cruises.

Once trials are completed the ship will then come out of the dock on 25 March and had to Genoa for its maiden cruise visiting Ajaccio, Barcelona and Marseille.

MSC is spending EUR200 million refitting its four smaller ships under the ‘Renaissance’ project.

Alongside the cabins and kids’ clubs the ship will also have new dining options with a buffet staying open for 20 hours, a new lounge and extended restaurant.

Its Aurea Spa will also have massage areas and a new outdoor spray park added.

MSC Opera will enter drydock to be stretched from 2 May to 4 July, followed by MSC Lirica from 31 August to 2 November.
