The Mumbai Metro network will be extended as far as the cities of Thane and Pune, Maharashtra’s chief minister has confirmed.
Prithviraj Chavan said on Saturday that the government has proposed a new Thane metro route to the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), which is expected to report back on the project in a month’s time. According to a preliminary report, revealed by the Economic Times, the line will run 32km between Thane, Ghatkopar and Wadala.
Chavan added that the state government was considering a new metro service connecting as far as Pune, some 148km from Mumbai.
The first phase of the Mumbai Metro – an 11.4km stretch of track connecting Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar, was inaugurated on 8 June 2014.
The initial three-line total project is expected to be completed in three phases over a 15-year period, including the 32km line two between Charkop, Bandra and Mankhurd, and a 33.5km line three connecting Colaba, Bandra and the Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ).
