A new agreement has been signed that will aim to position Mumbai as a “holiday gateway to India” for Japanese tourists.
The deal, signed between the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and the government of Japan’s Wakayama prefecture, will develop closer trade and tourism ties between the two regions. And following this initial agreement, the Wakayama government has agreed to help Maharashtra develop relations with other Japanese prefectures.
Wakayama is located in the Kansai region of Honshu Island, close to Osaka.
Maharashtra’s Minister of Tourism, Shri Jaykumar Jitendrasinh Rawal, said that the new agreement formed part of efforts to boost his state’s tourism sector, in line with Visit Maharashtra Year 2017.
“We are delighted that in the first month of January… we could extend our goodwill to Wakayama prefecture as a part of our marketing and goodwill strategy,” he commented.
The bilateral agreement will also encompass several other areas, including “IT, industry and town planning”. Maharashtra is also considering basing a tourism officer in Wakayama area to promote the state.
