Myanmar National Airlines has started the expansion and renewal of its short-haul fleet, with the delivery of its first ATR 72-600 aircraft.
The new turboprop touched down in Yangon this week, becoming the first of six ATRs ordered by the national carrier. Deliveries of the remaining five will run until 2017.
The ATR -600 series is the newest model from ATR. The 72-600 version can seat approximately 70 passengers and will be deployed on domestic routes.
“We are upgrading our fleet with an aircraft that is proving to be outstandingly successful, particularly in Asia,” said Than Tun, Myanmar National Airlines’ managing director. “Upgrading to the newest -600s came naturally after having successfully operated former ATR versions for years,” said
The airline currently operates a fleet of 12 aircraft, including six ATRs. It also recently took delivery of its first Boeing 737-800, which will be used to launch flights to Singapore later this month.
As well as the remaining five ATR72-600s, Myanmar National Airlines is planning to take delivery of nine more B737s and two Chinese-made COMAC ARJ21s in the next few years.
