The city of Harbin, in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, will soon have another local airline after the country’s aviation authorities cleared the launch of new start-up carrier.
In a statement on its website last week, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said it has given clearance for the launch of Longjiang Air, a new private carrier being financed by a local gold merchant.
Based at Harbin’s Taiping International Airport, Longjiang Air plans to fly domestic routes using a fleet mainly consisting of Embraer E190 regional jets. The company will launch with an initial capital investment of CNY800 million (US$130m).
Longjiang Air will become the second airline based in Harbin – a city of more than five million people.
HNA Group, which operates Hainan Airlines, already operates its regional subsidiary Heilongjiang Airlines from the city.
