A new Chinese-funded airline will launch flights from Kathmandu next month.
Himalaya Airlines is a joined venture between Nepalese investors and Tibet Airlines, the Lhasa-based carrier that is part-owned by Air China. Tibet Airlines will hold a 49% stake in the new venture, and will initially supply aircraft to the new venture.
A repainted Tibet Airlines Airbus A320 touched down at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on 9 March, marking the first jet in the Himalaya Airlines fleet. This aircraft is equipped with 158 seats in two classes, and is expected to be launched on the Kathmandu-Delhi-Doha route on 12 April 2016. The airline then plans to build a fleet of 15 A320s within five years.
Future destinations are expected to include the Chinese cities of Lhasa, Chengdu and Beijing.
Himalaya Airlines received its Air Operator’s Certificate in 2015 and will operate using the ‘H9’ flight code.
