oram, the small Indian state sandwiched between Bangladesh and Myanmar, now has more connections to the rest of India following the launch of two routes by SpiceJet.
In line with the Indian government’s policy of extending air connectivity to remote parts of the country, especially states in the northeast, SpiceJet has now commenced new services linking Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, with Kolkata and Guwahati. Both routes offer onward connections to and from Delhi.
“Our new direct flights from Aizawl… reflect our seriousness and commitment of connecting northeast with rest of the nation through our increasing network,” Shilpa Bhatia, SpiceJet’s senior vice president of commercial told reporters at Aizawl’s Lengpui Airport. “Aizawl, despite being a crucial destination within the northeast region, has been deprived of good air connectivity. This is also because of the difficult terrain that Aizawl is situated in.
“The introduction of the new flights would not only give a boost to the air connectivity but it will also give more options to the passengers traveling to and from Aizawl,” she added.
The two new routes from Aizawl will both operate daily using the airline’s Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft. On the Guwahati route, flights depart Aizawl at 1230 and arrive in the Assamese city at 1330. The return flight leaves at 1350 and arrives in Aizawl at 1455. On the Kolkata route, SpiceJet will take off from Aizawl at 1515 and arrive in the West Bengal capital at 1625. On the return leg, flights depart Kolkata at 1105 and arrive in Aizawl at 1210.
As well as connections to Delhi, passengers travelling though Kolkata can connect with SpiceJet to Bengaluru, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and even Bangkok.
SpiceJet has dedicated a fleet of Q400s to the expansion of its northeastern markets.
