A cross-border new rail service connecting India with Bangladesh will start operating next month, it has been revealed.

The Economic Times reported a “senior official” with India’s Railways Ministry as saying that the new Kolkata-Khulna service is likely to commence during Bangladeshi Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina’s state visit to India in January 2017.

The 155km line between Kolkata and Bangladesh’s third largest city already handles freight traffic, but it will now carry passenger trains.

This follows the recent increase in frequency of the Maitree Express, which connects Kolkata with Dhaka, to four trains per week.
