IHG has signed a deal to that will see it open its second InterContinental hotel in Sydney.
The company has penned a new management deal to take over the running of a famous hotel in Double Bay, which will undergo a major refurbishment before reopening as the InterContinental Sydney Double Bay in January 2014.
Initially opened in 1991, the hotel was a Ritz-Carlton in the 1990s and gained dubious fame as the property where Australian rock star Michael Hutchence was found dead in 1997. It became the Stamford in 2001 but closed in 2009 with a view to being redeveloped.
And its new owners, Singapore-based Royal Hotels, have decided to restore the hotel to its former glory. Upon reopening as an InterCon, facilities at the hotel will include a restaurant, café, lounge, bar, club lounge, rooftop pool and bar, and meeting space, including a 300-pax capacity ballroom. A ground floor arcade will also be developed beneath the hotel, which is expected to include a health club and retail space.
“We are tremendously excited about relaunching this property and becoming a member of the… InterContinental family,” said Bobby Hiranandani, director of Royal Hotels.
“Our plan is to rejuvenate this ideally-situated hotel and its surrounds, making it the destination for eastern suburbs locals and Australian and international visitors alike.”
InterContinental Sydney Double Bay will become the second InterCon in the city, following the 537-room InterContinental Sydney. IHG also operates two Crowne Plaza and six Holiday Inn hotels in the city, and has also announced plans to introduce its Holiday Inn Express brand to Sydney in 2014.
