Discussions are reportedly underway regarding the launch of a new passenger rail service connecting India with Bangladesh.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that the two countries are considering plans to resume services from Kolkata to Khulna, the third largest city in Bangladesh. If approved, the new service would run through the Petrapole-Benapole border checkpoint.
The PTI quoted a spokesperson for India’s Eastern Railway as saying that discussions have already started.
The Kolkata-Khulna passenger service previously operated prior to Bangladesh’s separation from India, and goods trains currently operate on the cross-border route.
At present, Kolkata is connected to Bangladesh by the Maitree Express train, which operates to and from the capital Dhaka.
