North Korea has extended the tour options for US citizens. The country’s government confirmed that Americans may visit North Korea for extended visits in 2012, unlike past years when US tourists could only visit for five days at a time. In addition, North Korea has said that US citizens may now visit throughout the year, rather than only during the annual Arirang Festival celebrations – two months of mass artistic performances to celebrate the birthday of Kim Il-sung.
The ban on Americans travelling by train between China and North Korea is still in effect, and all travellers to North Korea must still travel in groups. Authorities are slightly bending this rule however, enabling tourists to travel in “groups of one”.
North Korea specialist, Asia Pacific Travel Ltd has released a series of tour itineraries for 2012, with group tour packages including visits to Kumgang, or ‘Diamond Mountains’, which has been closed to tourists since 2008.
