Norwegian has agreed to acquire four new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
The carrier has entered an agreement to lease four of the aircraft from International Lease Finance Corporation and are expected to enter service in 2017 and 2018.
In total the airline has ordered 14 wide-body aircraft and has three of the 787-8 model in use, although the 787-9 version is more environmentally friendly.
“In order to run a competitive long-haul operation, we are dependent on brand new, cost-efficient aircraft. I´m very satisfied to have secured an additional four 787-9 Dreamliners. This is a great airplane with high passenger comfort, long range and low fuel burn,” said Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.
Its order came as the airline reported pre-tax profits of NOK437 million (GBP42m) for 2013 although were lower than the NOK623m (GBP61m) posted in 2012.
Costs in setting up its long-haul routes had put a dent in numbers including accommodation, food and drinks for delayed passengers during initial operational problems.
Despite this the carrier’s turnover improved 21% to NOK15.6bn (GBP1.5bn) and the airline carried three million more passengers in 2013 to 20.7m.
