Norwegian Air’s CEO Bjorn Kjos has visited Washington DC in a bid to get approval for a foreign carrier permit in the US.

The airline started operating flights to and from several US destinations earlier this year with two US bases and is still yet to receive full approval from the US Department of Transportation (DOT).

It is applying under an Irish-based subsidiary Norwegian Air International which receive an Irish Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) back in February. The subsidiary was set up to gain traffic rights in the EU as Norway is not a member of the union.

“We are doing exactly what the Obama administration wants: create American jobs, bring tourists to the United States and offer Americans cheap flights. The transatlantic market has far too long been dominated by alliances that have been allowed to rule the market with high prices and limited choice,” said Kjos. “It has taken far too long for DOT to fulfil its legal responsibility and approve NAI’s application. Our vision is that ‘Everyone Should Afford to Fly’, and it is a principle we intend to continue with, also with Norwegian Air International and flights between the US and Europe.”

Norwegian employs 300 US cabin crew members for which it received 7,000 applications some of which were from ex-Delta, American and United employees.
