New Zealand Prime Minister John Key oversaw the start of construction on a new Park Hyatt hotel in Auckland today (9 March).

The PM took part in a ground-breaking ceremony at the waterfront site in downtown Auckland where the new NZ$200 million (US$136m) property will be developed.

He was joined by the Chinese ambassador to New Zealand, Hon Wang Lutong, Auckland Mayor Len Brown, and officials from Hyatt and Fu Wah International Group, the Beijing-based company selected to develop the hotel.

“For many years this… site has been known as the home of our America’s Cup sailing team, Emirates Team New Zealand, but being blessed with some of the best views of the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland City it was always destined for so much more,” said Panuku Development Auckland’s CEO, John Dalzell.

“We’re delighted with the standard of building Fu Wah and its design team have come up with, and the respect shown to the retention of public waterfront access as part of the project.

“We look forward to the positive impact Park Hyatt Auckland will have on the waterfront and the region,” he added.

Lim Wong, Fu Wah’s general manager of overseas investment, said that a further NZ$2.5m will be spent to develop a new public promenade, walkway and art exhibition area surrounding the 195-room Park Hyatt Auckland.

“It is important that the building is able to be enjoyed by the public as well as creating a public space for everyone to enjoy,” she commented.

Upon opening, the new hotel will become the first Park Hyatt in New Zealand and one of only 37 worldwide. Fu Wah also recently acquired the Park Hyatt Melbourne.
