New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key officially opened the new Sofitel Wellington hotel on Wednesday evening.
Then new property becomes the first luxury hotel to open in the New Zealand capital in more than 15 years, and the grand opening was attended by representatives of AccorHotels and CP Group, which owns the property.
“Sofitel Wellington is a strategic addition to our New Zealand hotel network and will play a key role in further elevating Wellington’s international profile and attractiveness as a key leisure and business destination,” said Simon McGrath, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for the Pacific.
“We are confident that Sofitel’s strong branding in the luxury market will appeal and cater to a range of domestic and international travellers.
“It’s been over a decade since a hotel of this quality and status has opened in Wellington and we are delighted that the Prime Minister could lend his time to officially launch the hotel,” he added.
The NZ$51 million (US$37m) Sofitel Wellington is located between two city landmarks, The Beehive and Botanical Gardens. It features 129 rooms and suites, all featuring free Wi-Fi and Smart TVs, plus The Green Room lounge and bar, Jardin Grill restaurant, an outdoor courtyard with fire pit, a fitness centre and function rooms.
It becomes the third luxury Sofitel in New Zealand, joining its sister hotels in Auckland and Queenstown.
