Outrigger’s Castaway Island resort in Fiji reopened this week, just three months after it was damaged by a tropical cyclone.
The luxury resort welcomed guests back on 1 June, having repaired the “significant damage” caused by Cyclone Winston in February. The company also used the closure to upgrade and refurbish some of the resort’s rooms and public areas.
“Winston may have been classified as the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in Fiji in recorded history, but the reopening of our beautiful island resort just three short months after such a severe storm is proof that our Castaway Island vuvale, our family, is stronger and more resilient than any storm,” said the resort’s general manager, Steven Andrews.
“Our hosts, most of whom stayed on the island during the cyclone, have worked tirelessly for the past three months. They have put in back-breaking days clearing debris, cleaning swimming pools, restoring gardens and making repairs to bures and thatched roofing,” he added.
Fourteen of the island’s 65 “bures” were either upgraded or completely rebuilt or revamped during the renovation, while the outdoor kitchen serving the resort’s restaurant has also been upgraded.
“The island is looking great again and our hosts are ready and enthusiastic about returning to a normal operation. It’s important not only to Castaway Island, Fiji Resort but to the overall Fijian economy,” Andrews concluded.
