One person was killed on Tuesday night when a passenger plane came under fire in Pakistan.
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight was coming into land at Peshawar Airport, in the northwest of the country, when it came under attack and was hit by approximately 12 gunshots.
Bloomberg reports that 196 people were onboard the aircraft at the time of the incident. One female passenger has been confirmed killed and two crew members injured. The plane was arriving at Peshawar following a flight from the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, and Pakistani media reported that the female passenger killed was “foreign”.
The attack on a passenger aircraft is believed to be the first of its kind in Pakistan, but comes just two weeks after a terrorist attack on Karachi Airport left 29 people dead.
Since this incident, the Pakistani army has launched a major offensive against militants in the northwest of the country, close to Peshawar.
Peshawar’s Bacha Khan International Airport was closed following the incident, but has since reopened.
