Passengers angered by flight delays have rioted at an airport in China.

Chinese state media reported that enraged passengers stormed check-in desks and smashed equipment, including computers, at Zhengzhou’s Xinzheng International Airport, in Henan province.

Photographs from the scene posted on Chinese social media sites showed police struggling to hold back a mass of people. The Global Times described the incident as a “riot”.

The incident occurred as heavy snow caused major flight delays on some of the busiest travel days of the year, as millions of people travelled back from their Lunar New Year holidays.

Flights were also delayed at Zhengzhou Airport earlier this week when an aircraft operated by Joy Air suffered a landing gear collapse after it landed, stranding it on the runway. No-one was injured in the incident, but 114 subsequent flights were delayed.
