The new Shanghai Disney Resort theme park will feature the world’s first attraction based on the Hollywood movie franchise, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

‘Treasure Cove’, as the new area will be named, becomes the first of the new park’s six themed zones to be announced. Based on the Disney movies starring Johnny Depp, Treasure Cove will include a range of experiences, including a boat ride called ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure’.

According to the resort, this ride will “heavily feature the characters and scenes derived directly from the movies” and will use “never-before-seen effects and technologies”.

“The ride will take guests down to the ocean depths, through the bellies of pirate ships, and straight into the heart of a ferocious naval battle, all the while braving the nautical twists, spins and turns of a pirate adventure,” the resort statement said.

Mike Crawford, general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, said the new zone would “honour both Disney heritage and appeal to our Chinese guests”.

“With a combination of new cutting-edge technology and innovation, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure’ will take our guests… on a first-of-its-kind pirate adventure you will never experience anywhere else in the world,” Crawford said.

Construction of Shanghai Disney Resort’ is continuing in the Pudong area of the city, and developers say it remains on track to open at the end of 2015.

Once complete, the complex will be the first Disney theme park in mainland China and the largest in the world, covering 3.9km². Earlier this year, work started on Shanghai Disney’s central “mountain”, which will be the second highest structure at in the theme park, after the Disney castle, and forms the basis for the Magic Kingdom area.
