Planes to try shark skin exteriors
Lufthansa announced that two of its Airbus A340-300 jets are to take part in trials in the summer that will test the aerodynamic qualities of shark skin.
The trials will last two years and involve small patches of shark skin varnish on the plane’s fuselage and wing edges.
The sharks’ skin is covered in tiny riblets that reduce turbulent vortices and the drag they cause, thereby diminishing surface resistance when moving at speed.
The technology has recently been used in swimsuits.
