Air Niugini, the Papua New Guinea-based carrier, is planning to expand its network following the placement of an order for the new fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
The deal, which was announced at the Singapore Airshow this week, will see Air Niugini purchase four B737 MAX 8s worth a total of US$440 million at current list prices. The airline’s chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, said the new jets would enable Air Niugini to expand into new markets.
“The 737 MAX will allow us to economically and efficiently connect our beautiful country with the rest of the world,” said Sir Frederick. “The superb economics of the 737 MAX will enable us to increase flight frequencies and develop into new markets which offer significant opportunities for Air Niugini.
“As our region continues to grow, the 737 MAX is the perfect choice for Air Niugini positioning us for success.”
The new aircraft will be delivered in 2020, following the arrival of the airline’s first B787 Dreamliner in 2017.
Currently Air Niugini operates a fleet of 26 aircraft, including ATR, Fokker, Bombardier and Boeing models. It operates flights to destinations including Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Manila, Sydney and Fiji.
