P&O has made history by becoming the first cruise line to call at Papua New Guinea’s Conflict Islands.
The 2,000-passenger Pacific Jewel docked in the remote, uninhabited island chain last week, marking its eighth port in Papua New Guinea.
The ship anchored off Panasesa Island, allowing passengers to enjoy such activities as kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding, as well as glass bottom boat and outrigger canoe tours.
“Even though they are close to Australia, many of Papua New Guinea’s picturesque islands are rarely visited because they are difficult to access. Cruising really is the easiest way to see this stunning corner of the world so we’re thrilled to add the beautiful Conflict Islands to our great list of destinations,” said P&O Cruises’ president, Sture Myrmell.
The historic call followed a partnership between P&O and Ian Gowrie-Smith, a local entrepreneur and conservationist who owns the freehold on the Conflict Islands. P&O has now added the destination to 11 of its Papua New Guinea itineraries in 2016.
