Princess Cruises has taken delivery of the Majestic Princess, its new luxury cruise ship designed specifically for the Chinese market.

The ship was officially handed over to Princess in a ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. It will now embark on its inaugural season of sailings in Europe, running until May, before sailing to Shanghai where it will begin its first Chinese homeport season in July.

“Majestic Princess has arrived and we are thrilled to add this new jewel to our crown representing the newest, most stylish and most luxurious flagship to our fleet,” said Jan Swartz, group president of Princess Cruises and Carnival Australia. “We are ready to deliver an exceptional international cruise vacation experience to our guests.”

The 3,560-passenger cruise ship will have many Chinese-focused facilities and services, including a noodle bar, tea lounge, dim sum bar and Cantonese restaurant, plus private karaoke rooms and 1,100m² of shopping space focusing on designer brands such as Cartier, Bvlgari, Burberry and Gucci.

As a Royal-class ship, Majestic Princess will also have many of the facilities already present on its sister ships, Regal Princess and Royal Princess. These include a huge outdoor movie screen, the “Princess Live” TV studio, and SeaWalk – a glass-floored walkway that extends over the edge of the ship, over the ocean.

Following its short European season, Majestic Princess will embark on a “Silk Road Sea Route” voyage to Asia on 21 May. This 49-day cruise will see the ship travel from Rome to Shanghai via multiple ports, including Athens, Dubai, Kochi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Xiamen. The ship’s first Chinese cruise will depart from Shanghai on 11 July, visiting destinations in Japan and South Korea.
