Puerto Rico has announced it is to offer an incentive to entice cruise lines to its shores.
The country’s governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla, has approved a plan to deduct US$4.95 from the US$13.15 fee that cruise lines currently pay per passenger on ships stopping in the country. The discount will be in place until June 2018 and applicable to the first 140,000 passengers.
On top of the saving the government will also put US$1 per passenger to ships moored in Puerto Rico for over eight consecutive hours. Any ship that makes more than 21 visits within a financial year will receive a US$2 deduction per passenger.
There are also planned incentives for buying supplies and hiring maintenance work.
The funds will be available from the start of 2014 financial year and paid for by the Puerto Rico Tourism Country and the country’s coffers.
