Qatar Airways touched down in Cambodia for the first time yesterday (20 February 2013), becoming the first Middle Eastern carrier to offer flights to the country.

Flight QR602 arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport on Wednesday 20 February 2013, and was greeted by local dignitaries and the traditional water cannon salute. The service will now operate daily, with flights stopping in Phnom Penh as part of the journey between Doha and Ho Chi Minh City.

“I take this opportunity to thank the Cambodian government and local airport authorities for their great support in helping us launch daily flights to this wonderful country,” said Qatar Airways’ CEO, Akbar Al Baker.

“Though Cambodia is one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia, it has an air travel market that is highly underserved. Qatar Airways is here to fill this void and we look forward to working with the travel trade and our business partners to make this a hugely successful operation.”

The Phnom Penh route will be operated using a two-class, 284-seat Airbus A330 aircraft.

Qatar Airways’ Asian expansion will continue next month, with flights to Chengdu commencing on 19 March 2013.
