Qatar Airways has relaunched flights to Myanmar following a four-year absence.
The country’s largest city, Yangon, will be served three times a week direct from Doha. The overnight flights will depart the Qatari capital every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday at 2105, arriving in Yangon at 0700 the next day. The return service will depart Yangon at 0830 every Monday, Thursday and Friday, getting back into Doha at 1130. All flights will be operated using a two-class Airbus A319 with 120 seats – eight in business class and 102 in economy.
“There has never been a better time to expand into Myanmar,” said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways’ CEO. “At Qatar Airways, we remain committed to opening up access to destinations that are largely underserved by international airlines and that have great market potential. Yangon is an example of this and 2012 will continue to be one of our biggest years of expansion addressing the underserved markets that our strategy has focused on.
“As we continue to grow and receive more aircraft, we will look at other opportunities to expand our network and further strengthen our brand presence around the world. This includes the ASEAN region, especially at a time when the region is preparing to implement its open skies policy in 2015, which will open up air access even more to this dynamic part of the world,” he added.
Yangon becomes Qatar Airways’ 10th gateway in the ASEAN region following Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Hanoi, Singapore, Manila and Phuket, and its 119th destination worldwide. Qatar Airways suspended flights to Yangon in January 2008.
