Qatar Airways is to increase the weight allowances for luggage on its routes worldwide.

From 1 September those travelling in economy with the airline will have 30kg instead of the current 23kg, while those in business class will have 40kg and first class passengers will have up to 50kg. The number of bags allowed remains the same for each tier.

If a passenger is taking a return journey from 1 September they will have the full allocation even if they travelled out before the changeover date.

New increased excess rates will also be released in September, with an advanced booking discount available.

“Revising our standard baggage allowance comes at a time whereby the number of destinations we fly is increasing and our global reach is broadening,” said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker. “The number of customers we see travelling for longer periods of time, whether for business or on holiday, reflects the necessity for increased baggage allowance no matter their destination.
